"About: VSTEP is aligning itself to become a powerhouse on campus, working with other organizations on campaigns to bring awareness to environmental injustice. We are planning on working with VCEG to develop a carbon neutrality proposal, to fight to get Coca-Cola off campus, create a global warming campaign featuring the ski industry in Vermont, and producing reusable water bottles/coffee mugs to hand out to students. We also volunteer our time at worthy organizations like the Intervale's conservation nursery, project Hotseat, and the Green Mountain Club.
Goal: To get International Paper to stop burning tires without proper filters in Ticonderoga. The smoke gets blown right into the Champlain Valley, and is full of particulates and dangerous chemicals. In addition, they are releasing almost 450,000 lbs of CO2 in the air daily, putting an additional burden on the atmosphere. Tires can be recycled, but to add insult to injury they have gotten the permit from the EPA and NYDEC for burning with a 30-year old boiler that only traps 70% of matter, as opposed to the industry standard of 95%."
