Mission Statement of the Michigan Student Sustainability Coalition

Sustainability: the practice of meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (United Nations, 1992).
We, the students of the state of Michigan, will act to improve the future of our communities, our state, our nation, and our planet by campaigning for the just, balanced distribution and use of social, political, economic, and environmental resources.
As a coalition of individuals and organizations from colleges and universities across the state, we will work together to:
• Inform our peers and fellow citizens about the consequences of climate change and other environmental problems by improving and expanding environmental education at colleges, universities, and other learning institutions.
• Implement lasting, sustainable institutional practices – including improved energy efficiency and expanded renewable energy use – by maintaining active student involvement in college- and university-level sustainability efforts.
• Make the communities we live in more sustainable by informing and empowering all community members.
• Positively influence other Michiganders’ actions and opinions in environmental matters by establishing working examples of sustainable institutions and communities.
• Give sustainable practices the force of law by lobbying for and helping create sound legislation at the local, state, and national levels.
In all of these endeavors, we will advance the goals of ecological integrity, economic vitality, and social equity.
We encourage committed Michigan-based individuals and student organizations of all types, purposes, orientations, and school affiliations to join the Michigan Student Sustainability Coalition.
