"About: The ""Ten by Ten"" Student Initiative at Berea College is a part of the growing national movement of students and youth working for energy justice on our campuses and in our communities. We believe Berea College_s goal of sustainability requires a conscious and preemptive transition to clean renewable energy sources, as does its goal to serve the communities from which our students come; rural and urban Appalachia.
Goal: We work to reduce overall energy use at Berea College and we encourage Berea College to meet ten percent of the energy demand with clean renewable energy sources by the year 2010. We work to raise awareness of the injustices of fossil fuel use, such as environmental racism, and to empower students to actively respond to these injustices. We are currently proposing to install a 1 kW solar PV panel on a the Alumni Building, which houses our cafeteria, student lounges, and the offices of student life and alumni relations. We are collecting pledges and fundraising to make the installation possible. We have already raised half the money for the installation. We are also working to establish a rolling Renewable Energy Fund and overseeing body with student and administrative representatives to pay for and ensure additional renewable energy infastructure on our campus."
